Alexander leading the Royal Squadron of the Macedonian Companion Cavalry. The figures are a mixture of Zvezda plastic - Alexander, second and fourth (rear) ranks - and Newline Design's lead - first rank command group and third rank. They go together quite well. The Newline figures are a bit stockier and have less detail, particularly on the horses, but the poses match well. For the other squadrons of the Companion Cavalry, which seem to have had only 300 men compared to the 400 in the Royal Squadron, I will not add a fourth rank.
Closer view of the Command base. These share a sabot with two bases of troopers. The three bases in the third and fourth rank are each on their own straight sabot. Put together, they make a wedge shape, which looks striking, although I am told there is little or no contemporary evidence for the Macedonians having used wedge formations!
Below are some pezhetairoi or foot companions of the Macedonian phalanx. Again, the sarissas look great but I am told that the contemporary evidence for their use by Philip and Alexander is not as robust as one has been led to believe. It seems that the older I get the less I find I know.
Anyway, the figures in the foreground are Zvezda and beyond that are all HäT. This group is of six blocks of 16 figures, each representing one syntagma of 256 men. All the sarissas are made from brass rod which fit well into the Zvezda ring hands but are rather easy to knock out of the open hands of the HäT figures. For that reason I have been switching over to Newline figures for the Seleucid army I am working on.
