Happily I now have to hand several more publications from the Pike and Shot Society's 'Twilight of Divine Right' series. The three pictured above are scenario books for the Thirty Year's War and beyond - up to the Peace of the Pyrenees of 1663 - and for the English Civil War. These give set ups for 27 battles of the Thirty Years War, from the White Mountain in 1618 to Lens in 1648 and on up to Ameixial - a battle in the Portuguese Restoration War of 1663, one of several that I had not heard of before. So, lots to explore and try out with the armies I already have - though I can see from a quick look through that quite a bit more painting is going to be needed to field the forces required for many of these battles.
In addition, the extension rules and scenario book for Eastern European battles from 1605 to 1629 will give me something else to look forward to. There are two more scenario books for Eastern Europe but I will leave those until I am in position to sit down to the extensive painting that will be needed to raise full armies for this theatre of war, rather than just auxiliary units to add a bit of extra colour to Central European battles of the Thirty Years War.
Update on 30 May : after making up a table to compare troop requirements for each scenario against available figures I am happy to find that already there are enough figures painted to fight 6 out of the 8 English Civil War Scenarios and 12 out of 28 for the Thirty Years War and extensions up to 1663 (I have included in the total scenarios the two starter scenarios for Fleurus and Cheriton found in the original rule book). Another 7 scenarios for the Thirty Years War as well as the two remaining from the English Civil War look to be within reach of the kind of painting program that seems reasonable for the rest of the year but I cannot see myself reaching the 50 cavalry regiments needed for 2nd Breitenfeld any time soon!
Your hands are full with much to explore. Enjoy the journey!
ReplyDeleteWill be fighting the Battle of Ameixal - 1663 Portuguese Restoration War - at the Club monthly meeting on 22nd. Only need to paint 3 more infantry regiments before then!
