Macedonian Infantry Command

As I was working on the refurbishment of the second Macedonian phalanx group, I realised that command bases would be needed as well.  There were some previously painted HäT command figures, but these looked very poor against the refreshed infantry.  I decided to repaint these and add to their number with a couple of groups of Newline command figures.

The finished line up.  3 bases of HäT figures in the middle, flanked by 2 of Newline figures

Close up of one of the Newline groups.  To get the embossed Macedonian star pattern on the shields - which come plain - several layers of thickened white paint were built up to make the pattern, then Vallejo bright bronze painted over the top.  Seems to work ok but I don't think I will try any of the more complex shield patterns that they used.

Each base has an unflocked square of magnetic material at the back

so rating codes or identification markers can be added easily

This gives all the command bases that will be needed for the Lamian War refight.  I just need to sort out a few cavalry bases and all will be ready for the campaign.

The unflocked command bases were pressed into service yesterday as Macedonians took on Thebes in a quick first try out of the Society of Ancients' 'Alala' rules

  1. Clever use of magnets to attach markers, and very nicely painted.

    1. Thank you. On the magnets, I have learned a couple of lessons from this first use. One, cover the magnetic material with masking tape before putting on white glue and flock - it is hard to avoid getting some on the magnet otherwise. Two, use a thicker piece so that the surface is above the level of the flock so that markers will lie flush and hold place well.
